Aoibheann Greenan, Dingbox with an introductory text by Jessica McGoff
For this edition of ‘aemi online’ we present Dingbox (2020), a new moving image work by Aoibheann Greenan that attests to the innovation demonstrated by artists to sustain their practice despite the overwhelming restrictions of the last year. Shrewdly made with the laptop/phone screen viewer in mind while invoking some recognisable tropes of early cinema, Dingbox is a work abound in mind-state energies that harnesses the solo viewing experience to maximum effect. Familiar cultural phenomena err into transgression at every quick reveal within the work’s powerful looping 5 minute duration.
Jessica McGoff’s accompanying introductory text effectively explores the push and pull of Dingbox: not only the recent and historical contexts of unboxing videos and “the cinema of attractions”, but the psychological conflicts laid into the foundations of Greenan’s impressive and utterly absorbing work.
