aemi Newsletter & Year in Review 2023

Published date: 20 Dec 2023

Hi there,

As we close off our year we wanted to send through this overview of our 2023:
aemi’s year in review 2023.

A busy year with many highlights as you can see.

It also felt particularly significant to close off our artist film programme at IFI last week with a screening of Sky Hopinka’s film maɬni – towards the ocean, towards the shore (an event we co-hosted with Stereo Editions and Temple Bar Gallery & Studios). As we mentioned at that screening Sky recently withdrew the film from a screening at the documentary festival IDFA in solidarity with Palestinian filmmakers and friends. We hosted the screening in a similar spirit of solidarity, using it as an opportunity to consider shared struggles, and to open up a space of empathy, a space enriched through the experience of Sky’s film. As we close this year off our minds and attention continue to be with our Palestinian friends. In addressing the controversy Sky closed off his statement about the film’s withdrawal with an expression of “support of the Palestinian people, in call for an immediate ceasefire, and in demand for a free Palestine”. An expression that should be uncontroversial. We at aemi continue to keep this in mind as we consider now the year ahead and hope for a better future.

Happy Christmas and best wishes,

Daniel and Alice
